Monthly Progress Report

SAAPS-MR-27-99/00/01

Period: 2001-05-19--07-03

Authors: Lars Eliasson and Peter Wintoft

1. Progress status

Progress meeting Nr 6 was held 18 May at ESTEC.

This period (18 May - 3 July) was dominated by programming activities.

The Sun Ultra 5 SAAPS server was replaced by a Sun Blade 100 as the old workstation did not work properly. Everything now works as expected.

Leif Kalla spent one week in Lund (11-15 June) to work on the SAAPS project.

In parallel with the web applets we have also developed a SAAPS application that can run on a stand-alone computer. The SAAPS application has a graphical interface to the tools available in SAAPS.

The following new code have been implemented in Java: the main SAAPS application, the tool for estimating the best prediction model from user data, and three different prediction models.

A distribution package of SAAPS has been created. It contains a subset of the database, the binary code and other executables, and the source code with Java documentation. A gnu-zipped tar archive was created and put on the web pages along with downloading and installation instructions. See http://www.irfl. lu.se/saaps/saapsint/download/index.html

Due to vacation period and other rescue operations we have proposed to delay final delivery until 18-19 October.

WP 110 URD for the database and database tools

An updated User Requirements Document for the database and database tools URD v ersion 1.1 of WP110 was delivered on 27 April 2000.

WP120 SRD for the database and database tools, DB&T

The SRD Version 1.0 was delivered on 18 August 2000.

The technical note TN 1 (Database and database tools) version 0.2 was delivered on 31 January 2000. This note had previously the title Exploration of data.

WP130 Development of DB&T

Several users have been given user names and passwords so that they can test SAAPS. Most of the data is available in the database.

WP140 Test and update of DB&T

A new version of the Test Plan for SAAPS version 1.0 was delivered 28 February 2001 and can be found on http://www.irfl.lu.se/saaps/saapsin t/.

A description can be found at: http://www.irfl. lu.se/saaps/saapsint/wp205/wp205doc.html

WP210 URD for SAAM

The User Requirements Document for the Satellite Anomaly Analysis Module URD WP210 version 1.1 was delivered on 4 November 1999.

WP22 0 SRD for SAAM

The SRD Version 1.0 was delivered on 18 August 2000.

An updated version of TN 2 (Satellite anomaly analysis module) version 0.2 was submitted 3 April 2000.

The SRD Version 1.0 was delivered 18 August 2000.

The technical note TN 3 (Satellite anomaly prediction module) version 0.3 was delivered 6 February 2001.

WP330 Development of SAPM

A password protected beta version of SAPM is available to some operators.

A draft version of Technical Note 4 (Predicting GOES-08 electron flux) was delivered 2 June 2000 and can be found on http://www.irfl.lu.se/saaps/saapsin t/.

WP340 Testing and demonstration of SAPM

A new version of the Test Plan for SAAPS version 1.0 was delivered 28 February 2001 and can be found on http://www.irfl.lu.se/saaps/saapsin t/.

2. Problem areas/reasons for slippage

It was agreed during PM6 to delay the final delivery until mid-July 2001. We have, however, made an updated plan for the remaining work and found that this will not be possible. We have, for several reasons needed to spend time on other projects that are essential for future possibilities to collaborate on space weather related topics. Summer vacation period is causing additional delay. New proposed days for final delivery are18-19 October.

3. Events anticipated to be accomplished during next reporting period

The SAAPS software is expected to be ready at the end of the next period (end of August).

4. Status report on all long lead or critical delivery items

None

5. Action items

The following 11 action items were identified at the PM6 held at ESTEC 18 May 2001.

1. Peter Wintoft shall continue to try to get in contact with Paolo Maldari (ESOC).

2. Alain Hilgers shall confirm the name of the new contracts officer for the project.

3. Peter Wintoft shall contact Lars Blomberg, Sven Grahn and Torsten Neubert to ask if they can provide more anomaly data.

4. Peter Wintoft will contact G Reeves and discuss possibilities to update the LANL data set.

5. Peter Wintoft shall increase the number of beta users. It was suggested to include D Rodgers, R Horne, N Crosby, K Ruttten, D Heyndricks, S Clucas, A Coates, and F Lefeuvre.

6. Lars Eliasson shall write a "product-perspectives report", covering commercial evaluation, technology transfer, future development and maintenance plan.

7. Peter Wintoft shall include an acknowledgement to data providers in the SAAPS system.

8. Peter Wintoft shall send an email to ask if the beta users have tested the beta version and if they have any suggestions for improvements.

9. Peter Wintoft shall deliver a preliminary version of the software before 8 June. **The software was delivered 18 June.**

10. Peter Wintoft will update the technical notes before 1 June.

11. Alain Hilgers will send comments on the technical notes before 8 June.

6. Milestone payment status

Progress payment has been received.

7. Expected dates for major schedule items

The final review is planned to be held at ESTEC18-19 October 2001.
