Forecasting with a Solar Radar Today's Forecast Capabilities
Space weather refers to solar conditions that can influence the Earth's atmosphere, technological systems and endanger human life and health.

Fast full or partial halo, i.e. Earthward directed, coronal mass ejections cause the most severe space weather effects. Early detection is important. Accurrate forecasts of the arrival time at Earth and an accurrate description of the CMEs are also very important.

A solar radar would greatly improve the observations of CMEs and herewith increase the possibilities to mitigate the effects of the space weather.

LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) is a proposed large radio telescope array that will operate in the 10-240 MHz frequency range. Its 13 000 dipole antennas will be clustered in roughly 100 stations spread over a region 400km across. LOIS (LOFAR Outrigger in Scandinavia) extends LOFAR scientifically and technology by adding a radar capability.
