There is an open call for papers for the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, 7-12 April 2013

Deadline for abstract submission: 9 January 2013

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2013 will be held in Vienna, Austria, 07 ˆ 12 April 2013.

The early abstract submission deadline is: 9th January 2013.

The EGU Solar-Terrestrial Sciences Division considers all aspects of solar and heliospheric physics, specifically the solar-terrestrial connection. It covers the physical processes occurring on the Sun, in the solar wind, as well as in Earth‚s magnetosphere and ionosphere. For more information, see:

From: Ioannis A. Daglis <daglis - at - noa.gr>

A 4-day workshop with the title "Radiation Belts: Comprehending, Specifying and Forecasting their dynamics" will include sessions on:

- Specification models of the radiation belts and in particular the slot region (AE9/AP9 and other)

- Waves, wave-particle interactions and radiation belt dynamics

The Workshop will be followed by Technical Progress Meetings of the MAARBLE and SPACECAST projects of the European Union's FP7-Space Program on 4th and 5th July, 2013.

Details will be announced in January.

Scientific Organizing Committee: I.A. Daglis, H. Evans, R.B. Horne, P. O'Brien

3. Postdoctoral position on solar irradiance at LPC2E within the European SOLID project

****************************************************************************************

Matthieu Kretzschmar <matthieu.kretzschmar - at - cnrs-orleans.fr>

We are inviting applications for a two-year post-doc position on the analysis and modelling of solar spectral irradiance data at the Laboratory for Physics and Chemistry of the Terrestrial Environment (LPC2E, Orléans, France). This position is in the frame of the European SOLID (first European comprehensive SOLar Irradiance Data exploitation) project, which aims at building a complete and homogeneous database of solar spectral irradiance, using observational and simulation data.

The successful candidate will work on assessing the quality of various solar irradiance data sets from different satellites and on building a composite time series from them. We are looking for strongly motivated candidates who have a PhD in solar physics or in a closely-related field. Experience in irradiance data analysis is an asset but is not compulsory. Good programming skills with either Matlab or IDL are required.

Orleans is a pleasant medium size city, located about one hour south of Paris by train. The LPC2E is involved in several space missions, including Solar Orbiter and Solar Probe Plus. The salary is according to the CNRS grid and can take into account previous experience. Funding is available for travel.

The position will open nominally on January 1, 2013 and we would like to fill it in as soon as possible.

4. First Announcement of Space Climate 5 meeting

****************************************************************************************

FRom: Timo Asikainen <timo.asikainen - at - oulu.fi>

Dear Colleagues and Friends!

We have the great pleasure to invite You to

Space Climate Symposium-5

which will be held in Oulu, Finland, on 15.-19. June, 2013.

Space Climate is an interdisciplinary science that deals with the long-term change in the Sun, and its effects in the heliosphere and in the near-Earth environment, including the atmosphere and climate. A special focus will be on studies of the causes, consequences and implications of the present, unusually low solar activity since solar cycle 23 that, most likely, indicates the imminent end of the Modern Grand Maximum of solar activity. Other topics include solar dynamo, solar irradiance variations, solar wind, geomagnetic field and activity, cosmic rays and cosmogenic isotopes, and solar effects on different layers of the atmosphere and on local and global climate, as well as possible solar effects on human health and on the development of human cultures.

SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZING COMMITTEE  J. Beer, P. Charbonneau, E. Cliver, T. Dudok de Wit, M. Echim, K. Georgieva, S. Gibson, N. Gopalswamy, D. Marsh, K. Mursula (chair), D. Nandy, A. Rouillard, A. Ruzmaikin, A. Tlatov, E. Turunen, I. Usoskin (vice-chair), M. Voiculescu, A. Zhukov.

LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE  T. Asikainen (chair), L. Holappa, V. Maliniemi, K. Mursula, I. Usoskin, I.I. Virtanen, I.O. Virtanen, L. Zhang
