1. European Space Weather Week #5, 17-21st November, Brussels 2008
**********************************************************************

From: Alexi Glover, Jean Lilensten and Ronald Van der Linden

We are pleased to announce that the Fifth European Space Weather Week will take place in Brussels between 17-21st November 2008.

Conference Website: http://sidc.oma.be/esww5 and http://www.esa-spaceweather.net/spweather/workshops/esww5/index.html

This meeting is being jointly organised by the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB), ESA, the SWWT and the COST 724 communities. The local organisation is done by the SIDC of the ROB. This event will continue to build on the advances made during the first four European Space Weather Weeks held between 2004 and 2007. More information will be available online soon. In the meantime, for further information please contact Alexi Glover, Jean Lilensten or Ronald Van der Linden

3. Call For CubeSats on the Vega Maiden Flight
**********************************************************************

From: Roger Walker

Following on from the agreement signed between the ESA Directorates of Launchers and Legal Affairs and External Relations in May 2007 regarding Educational Payload on the Maiden Flight of the Vega Launcher, and the successful CubeSat workshop held at ESTEC on 22-24 January 2008, the ESA Education Office has the pleasure in issuing a Call For CubeSat Proposals to universities in ESA Member and Cooperating States.

The launch opportunity on the Vega Maiden Flight is offered free of charge for up to 6 CubeSats, with an additional 2 backup CubeSats on stand-by.

Proposals are solicited from interested universities with CubeSat projects of sufficient maturity level to be able to meet the Vega Maiden Flight schedule (current target launch date of December 2008).

However, recognising that this is a challenging schedule for many teams and in order to offer the possibility of a free launch to a wider set of universities, the Agency also encourages the submission of proposals from CubeSat teams able to deliver flight hardware in early 2009. These latter proposals might be accommodated in case of slippages in the Vega Maiden flight launch date.

All details concerning this Call For Proposals can be found in the Call document via the ESA Education webpage.

http://www.esa.int/esaED/

Proposals (max. 15 pages) must be submitted via e-mail to:

education at esa.int

in PDF or MS Word format by the deadline of 17 March 2008.

Receipt of the submitted proposals will be acknowledged by return of e-mail. Proposals will then be evaluated by the ESA Selection Board and the selected CubeSats will be announced on the ESA Education web portal by 15 April 2008. Selected teams will then be contacted with further instructions on their participation in the Vega Maiden Flight until launch, including technical interface meetings.

4. 8th European Workshop on Radiation Effects on Components
and Systems, Jyväskylä, 10-12 September 2008
**********************************************************************

From: Petteri Nieminen

The 2008 European Workshop on Radiation Effects on Components and Systems will be organized from 10th to 12th of September 2008 in Jyväskylä, Finland.

workshop Website: http://www.radecs2008.jyu.fi/

The event is organized by the Department of Physics of the University of Jyväskylä. The workshop will take place in Agora Center on the University Campus, which is within a walking distance of the city centre. The workshop will consist of oral and poster presentations describing the latest observations in radiation effects on materials, electronic components and systems.

The RADECS Workshop is an important European meeting point for people involved in the radiation effects community. The event offers valuable technical presentations given by professionals in a cordial and relaxed atmosphere.

We invite submissions of papers reporting significant and new findings in the following or related areas:

- Basic Mechanisms of Radiation Effects in Devices and Materials
- Hardness Assurance Methodology and Irradiation Test Facilities
- Radiation Test Methods and Procedures
- Radiation Effect on MEMS/NEMS
- Radiation Effects on Optoelectronic Components and Photonic devices
- Single-Event Effects, Displacement Damage and Ionising Effects
- Space, Atmospheric and Terrestrial Radiation Effects
- Characterization and Modelling of Radiation Environments
- Space Weather Events and Effects
- Radiation Hardening Techniques on Circuits and Systems
- New Developments of Interest to the Radiation Effects Community.

Summary papers accepted for oral or poster presentation at the workshop will be eligible for publication in the Workshop Proceeding based on submission of a complete paper, received no later than September 10, 2008.

Authors wishing their papers to be considered for publication in the special Workshop/RADECS2008 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science will have to submit their paper separately to the IEEE Manuscript Central web site. Further information on the submission and review process for final papers will be sent to prospective authors upon acceptance of their RADECS summary.

Summary submission deadline: March 31st, 2008
